Thoughts on 2018

A little recap: In May 2017 I was offered a position with IBM in Columbia, Missouri and relocated back to the Midwest. That month I adopted a little Shih-tzu I named Sullivan (aka Sully) after the small town in SE Missouri from where he was found.

I enjoyed my time in Columbia, Mo., and my work at IBM. In July 2018 I had the opportunity to work remotely and went back on the road with my two dogs, Argos and Sully.

We traveled West to visit many dear friends and in October we found a stray dog in northern Arizona – missing a foot, emaciated, and so weak she could only walk a couple of steps before collapsing. She joined my little menagerie, and after some trial and error was finally named Kayenta (aka Kaya) after the town nearish where she was found. Kaya adds a tremendous enjoyment and company to my home.

Before I started this particular on the road adventure I named it the “Finding Home Tour” and my main goals were to find some place I wanted to make a home base. Some place with community, some future-proofing for climate change, and beauty.

What I found in my heart was that I wanted to go back to the place I’ve continually called “home.” The small university town in Southern Illinois where I spent my formative years.

I’ve now been back here for a little over two months and I’m still terribly happy with this choice. I get to visit with my mom, and I have lot of old friends and new ones. We hike, lunch, dinner, drink, see bands, play trivia, act silly, take care of each other… and have community.

Of course, wanderlust still meanders around my dreams. That will never go away. I don’t kid myself that I’ll ever be a person to set down roots in one spot for 20+ years. But what I do want is a base from which to roam. A harbor I can always return to for rest and comfort. I’m hoping that 2019 brings that desire for a home to fruition.

    1. Hi Heather!
She is such a goofy terribly sweet doggie! And even with that lack of a foot nub, she gets around really well!
Thank you! Sending hugs and love to you and the family!

  2. Your small town sounds wonderful. I wish I lived in a place like it. Happy wanderings in 2019. I hope you post in this blog about them and life in a small town.

    1. hi Vicki!
It is pretty great in a lot of ways. It is still southern Illinois, so humidity and bugs a-plenty in the summer.
      We’ll see how I do with that…. 😀

I will keep blogging here about my local adventures!
      thanks!
